WHAT'S ÓX?

The name ÓX is the past tense of “to grow”. Relating to Thrainn’s original idea that has grown into what ÓX is today. An intimate and unique dining experience where Icelandic ingredients are focused on modern renditions of traditional Icelandic cuisine

The Origins of ÓX

The idea for ÓX was born in the remote Kjarrá fishing lodge in the mid-2000s. There, among the mountains of Borgarfjörður, I experienced something new—cooking for guests, sharing stories, and receiving instant feedback.

We lived with the fishermen for days, truly getting to know them, sometimes sharing a drink and a laugh late into the night. It was here that I first dreamed of creating a place where food wasn’t just served but shared—where guests could feel at home while experiencing Icelandic ingredients in a refined yet unpretentious way.

The Evolution of a Dream

In June 2022, ÓX was awarded a Michelin star—a recognition of the passion and dedication that shaped it from the start. Later that year, it was time to take the next step. We moved into our own space in November 2022, creating not just a new home for ÓX but also introducing Amma Don, our intimate speakeasy cocktail bar, which now welcomes guests. And in 2025 ÓX was awarded a green Michelin star.

A Connection to the Past

ÓX is deeply personal. The kitchen was built by my grandfather for the family farm in Snæfellsnes in 1961, a space that I envisioned as the heart of ÓX for years before we finally opened. My grandmother, Kristjana, was the caretaker of the famous black church at Búðir for over 50 years—another reminder of the traditions and roots that inspire everything we do.

The ÓX Experience

At ÓX Icelandic ingredients take center stage, prepared with respect and creativity. We play with traditions, reimagining them in new and unexpected ways. The goal is simple: to create an unforgettable experience—one that feels warm, welcoming, and genuine.
